PERCEPTIONS AND BELIEFS
Individual perceptions describe the different ways each one of us sees things: these are unique perceptions, formed from our own lives, shaped by our personal experiences, and their perspective can be clouded or heightened by our emotions. They emerge from our belief system which probably began in childhood, when the rules we were taught to live by were first set out by parents, and were usually based on what their parents taught them, passing from one generation to the next.
Selective perception relates to the way human beings filter stimulus based on experience. Perception is defined as the process of attaining awareness or understanding of sensory information.
In order to make sense of the world, every impulse is interpreted by our brains into thoughts and feelings. The way they're interpreted or distorted all depends on our beliefs. It's the reason that when the circumstances and events of your life are causing you misery, the only place to go to improve them is inside.
The brain is believed to be the most powerful information-processing-unit known to mankind. In any one single moment, only 1% of stimulus reaches our conscious awareness. The rest is filtered out. This is what keeps us sane. When the brain processes the 1% of stimulus that does reach our conscious threshold, in order to make sense of the world, every impulse is interpreted and converted by our brains into thoughts and feelings. And the way they are interpreted/distorted all depends on our beliefs.
